2 year VAP at an SLAC, low/med cost of living area
64,500 sal computer 1000 for research/travel 3/2 teaching (but only two preps during the 3 class semester, substantial choice in electives to teach) full health/dental/vision for self and family; retirement contribution no committee or advising responsibilities some moving expenses available (not relevant for me)
I was hoping for a TT position, but I'm grateful for this.

Gee, that's a nice offer. Congratulations!!!
At least the two years will give you a relief from job hunting for at least a year. Much better than a one-year VAP. Congratulations!

Since someone had asked about VAP stuff earlier, I'll share mine (which I'm sure people will think looks really crappy compared to the one just posted above, but I'm thrilled and that's all that matters):
1 year VAP at a regional public university in a small midwestern city with a very low cost of living. 40K salary + full benefits 100% teaching - no advising or service requirements 4/4 teaching load (140 students per semester - my classes have caps of 50/50/20/20) Computer and my own office $1500 moving expenses Funds available for conference travel as needed

Dear Laughthroughit,
Congratulations on your offer. An offer is an offer, and your cv is going to look stronger next year. Also the resourses that they are giving you is much better than what they give to TT positions at SLAC. I know of such an offer that is $42000, 4/4 load and no resourses except may be an office and pc.

Thanks guest 156! I'm totally pleased with the offer - for sure - I'm just aware that it's significantly lower in terms of salary than what other people have posted here thus far. This position was one of the top three on my "applied to" list, so, like I said, I'm thrilled with this job and the offer!

Also, remember that if they say the income offer isnt flexible they may be able to help you out in other ways...course releases, start-up accounts, equipment, and travel funds. Also, most public schools have what everyone in the department makes available online (on state employee websites) and you can compare to that. I was hired in the last 3 years and they gave me their best starting salary at the initial offer but then we worked out some other fringes.

Congrats, laughthroughit--I know my offer seems high, and I do think it's particularly generous for a VAP position, but to put it in perspective, I will be commuting more than 70 miles each way--the gas and the purchase of a second family car will eat up much of the salary. I too, however, am thrilled to have a job doing what I love at a school I respect. This was my second year on the market, and if I can't wangle something permanent out of this VAP position, I hope things will at least look brighter in two years. Best of luck to you and to everyone on the board.

Aww!! You SLACers are so nice! You know, I just sort of post things based on the mentoring I've received, the conversations I've had with friends and colleagues, and my own experiences on the market. But I'm glad that at least some of what I've posted has been helpful. I'll still be around for awhile since I'll be back on the market next year! Thanks for the congrats VAP! You have a sweet offer and I'm glad that it's an offer for a job you actually WANT and LIKE. Best wishes to you in getting that VAP line to go TT!

I'll still be around for awhile since I'll be back on the market next year! This is a bit off topic, but I wish that we had one forum that could handle multiple years of job seasons this way we didn't have to go through the same topics (about, say "should I do the ASA employment service?" or "what should I expect on a phone interview" etc) year after year. Overall I think the forum is a million times better than the old blog comment format.
