Job Description: MODERN CENTRAL ASIA. The University of Michigan welcomes applications for a permanent faculty (tenure-track or tenured) position in modern Central Asian studies, to begin September 2011. Rank is open; this is a university year appointment. The search emphasizes disciplinary expertise in the social sciences, but will consider candidates in any field other than History (although candidates using historical approaches to research are welcome to apply). The university seeks scholars with a deep contextual knowledge of the largely Islamic societies, cultures, and states of Central Eurasia. Candidates should have knowledge of relevant areas in the former Soviet Union, northwestern China (Xinjiang), Afghanistan, or nearby regions. The successful candidate will be expected to teach broadly about Central Asia at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Applicants should submit a letter of interest with CV, statement of current and future research plans, statement of teaching philosophy and experience, evidence of teaching excellence and short description of proposed courses, brief writing sample, and three letters of reference to: Central Asia Search Committee, International Institute, 1080 S.
