Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer

The Department of Sociology & Social Anthropology is a dynamic department offering both discipline-based undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and an inter-disciplinary postgraduate qualification in Social Science Research Methods. A demonstrated commitment to excellence in research, tertiary-level teaching and supervision is more important than the specific sub-field of sociology, although the Department is interested in strengthening its expertise in one or more of the following, viz. the sociology of work, development, race and identity, as well as the relationship between theory and methodology in research.
Duties: Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. supervision of postgraduate research, including doctoral students . active participation in departmental activities pertaining to research, publication, teaching and community interaction, including related administrative tasks . contributing to the management and academic development of the Department at a senior level (for appointment at Associate Professorial level).
Requirements: PhD in Sociology (an outstanding, sociologically informed degree in a cognate discipline may be considered on its merits) . professional experience at a tertiary education or research institution . a research and publications record appropriate for the specific post level . a demonstrated commitment to research excellence and to publishing in selected field(s) of sociological enquiry . capacity to supervise postgraduate students, including PhD-level .
willingness to work in a bilingual environment within a multilingual context . academic computer proficiency.
Recommendations/Advantages: Experience in successful postgraduate research supervision, especially at PhD-level .
active research projects in selected field(s) of sociological enquiry that extend or complement existing research activities in the Department . evidence of established national and international research networks, and demonstrated capacity to take on an academic leadership role within the Department (for appointment as Associate Professor) . evidence of successful fundraising for research projects.
Commencement: 1 October 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter
