Anyone notice a few weird things about these "posts"?
1. They're not on ASA, chronicle, or the university website 2. There are several odd typos (2010 instead of 2011, double periods, some odd capitalization) 3. Two very highly overlapping positions. 4. No distinguishing address between the two (Chair of which search committee?)
I call shenanigans.

Grads on the market in my department received an email from someone at the search committee--via our DGS--about these positions. Several of us (including myself) are having informal interviews with people on the Stony Brook search committee here at ASA. So if it is shenanigans, they're certainly going to a lot of trouble...

also worth noting is that while other departments at stony brook have posted their job ads on the university-wide employment site, there is and has been no sociology position listed there.
if these folks are really hiring with a 9/15/10 deadline they're doing one crappy job of advertising their position.
fwiw, i'm in a top 10 department and our dgs openly circulates all of the "we want to meet your top candidates" emails s/he gets from schools. we've seen those sorts of messages from at least four top programs and two or three smaller schools. nothing from stony brook.
i'm not accusing anyone misleading us, but something fishy is going on here.

I am not disputing the logic. However, I personally interviewed with Daniel Levy, and the person who was waiting to talk to him when my 30 minutes was up had a badge with "Harvard University" on it. I know of at least 4 others who also had interviews with Stony Brook at ASA. So I don't know if they were targeting particular departments or what. But given the ads we were sent, they're hiring for two positions this year.

Someone at SBU told me that one of the junior faculty with an international qualitative research agenda resigned earlier in the year, which explains one of the searches.
I think at least one of the searches is legit.

The person who left was Javier Auyero who went to UT Austin. It's my understanding that they want that type of scholar...

The junior faculty member did her dissertation work in Europe. She left the department this year. Javier left a year ago.
