The Department of Religion at Wesleyan University invites applicants for a tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor in the social scientific study of religion. We encourage applications from anthropologists, historians, and sociologists of religion who bring social scientific methods to bear on one or more religious cultures and traditions. We particularly are interested in Sub-Sahara African, East Asian, and Southeast Asian traditions, and in those who study indigenous traditions in any part of the world. The successful candidate will be expected to have Ph.D. in hand, or very near to completion, at the time of the appointment and to teach the Department’s “Introduction to the Study of Religion” and “Majors Colloquium in Religious Studies” on a rotating basis. Applicants should include a cover letter, curriculum vita, syllabi, at least three letters of recommendation, and two samples of scholarship. Preference will be given to applications received by October 15, 2010. Preliminary interviews will be conducted at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Religion this fall. Applications should be sent to Professor Peter Gottschalk, Chair, Search Committee, Religion Department, Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT 06459. Wesleyan University is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer and welcomes applications from women and historically underrepresented minority groups and all applicants who support diversity.
