I need to order a new computer for my new job What should I ask for? I'm a mac user at home, and want to ask for the MacBook Pro for work, but kind of feel hesitant. Which programs do I need to ask for? Any experience with specs or suggestions appreciated...

Congrats on the job! If you work with macs, then definitely ask for a mac. The software depends on what kind of work you do. You'll need an office productivity suite if that isn't automatically included, then stats software if you do quantitative work, or qualitative software if you do qualitative work, etc. Just take note the the software you use, even if it is just occasionally, then prioritize and get as much of it as you can.
The hardware specs depend on what sort of work you do. For me, I work exclusively with open source software and do a lot of computationally intensive stuff. As a result, I would allocate nearly my entire computer budget to hardware. I'd get a 64-bit system with a solid state drive and 16GBs of RAM or something equally ridiculous, then install the software I use on my own.

If you can, insist on being designated as an "administrator" on your computer system so that you can install software without waiting for IT staff to do it.
Waiting for software installation, updates, and licensing has been a huge PITA at my job.
