Has anyone heard of schools that offer half-time half-pay tenure track positions? If so, do you have any details on how these were negotiated and/or structured?

The school where I took a job allows job sharing. There's an official policy stating how it works. It's one way that the school (which is small) deals with spousal hires.

The one I've heard of was negotiated by two existing full-time profs at an institution that gave full benefits for 1/2-time employment. I don't know if the departmental situation that led up to it was a desire to open a new full-time line, or to deal with a lost line. But my friend who's been in this position for some time now loves it. She teaches 1 or 2 courses per semester (at a small liberal arts college) and has lots of time for work in the community.
