I have a question that everyone might find funny or stupid but I seriously want to know the answer.
If you are offered a VAP job and computer is part of the offer package. Does it mean that it is yours and you can take it with you when you leave? If I can take it with me, can I just ask for a laptop?
Thank you.

No, it's not yours. It belongs to the university, and it stays when you leave. You can still ask for a laptop, if you want to, but it too belongs to the university.

Also, if it is university property and you work at a public university, this might be legally searchable under FOI. (See the issues with Bill Cronon at WI...)

I got a computer in my VAP offer... I can choose the computer I want (PC or Mac, desktop or laptop), but it's not mine to take with me as personal property. It's just mine to use.

Thanks, everyone. I have always wondered because I had been adjuncting and I have a computer and an office and so I thought it's a different deal for a VAP or tt. Thank you all.

Related question: I've got a TT job waiting for me in the fall, and it comes with a nice chunk of 'research funds' to work with as I see fit (classes, books, computer/sw, travel, conferences, etc.) If I use this to buy a custom computer and software, would these be MINE, or the universities? (Obviously assuming that I'm buying these for my actual research needs and not just to play Call of Duty at home...)

Anything purchased with university funds (in almost all cases) still belongs to the university.

If it's at a public university like where I am at it depends. You cannot purchase a computer or any kind of computer peripheral (including but not limited to hard drives, printers). Software - if IT doesn't already have it available for your USE, then you can order it. The computer that the institution provides for you is their's. Everything else is pretty much yours that you spent your research funds on (e.g., books, DVDs for instruction, digital voice recorder). To be honest, the digital voice recorder should probably be given back to the department, but I don't think people really care. When you arrive at the institution, they'll usually tell you the dos and donts.
