I don't know who wrote that about the evil administration, but I can corroborate the general sentiment, as I have had close ties to Salem within the past several years.
However, this year there was a significant admin turnover, as two deans left for positions elsewhere, so the point may now be moot.
Generally, some faculty have no problems being at Salem; others are completely miserable, and for similar reasons - strong hierarchy, no real faculty power, not even an impartial ombudsperson to handle disputes.
With the admin transitions, things may change quite a bit.

The department is only 3 full-time members, but traditionally it's been a great department. People's major issues, across departments, seem to stem from the combination of Salem being very hierarchical (admin down to faculty) and from the small community (only 60-70 full-time faculty total). So you get on the wrong faculty member or administrator's bad side, and you can be ostracized fast, temporarily or permanently. In such a small community, this can have numerous consequences. Welcome to gossip city, land of paranoia. It's a systemic problem and fairly long-standing issue. I've known administrators, junior faculty, senior faculty, and even students be burned by these dynamics.
However-
The current soc dept chair is a great person and very supportive of colleagues. The students are good, the classes are small, and the city of Winston-Salem ain't too bad.
I'd say if you get an on-campus interview, try to talk to as many current junior faculty - privately - as you can. They may or may not corroborate any of this, but it's worth fishing.

Curious about the status of this position. It seems like they were moving fast. Has anyone completed phone/campus interviews yet?

They brought only one candidate to campus, last week. I do not know if they are planning to bring more, but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't. From what I hear, the candidate was impressive to both the search committee and the students.
