For obvious reasons, I am feeling a little run down as the job market winds down. So I am asking for suggested activities that qualify as a mental health break.

I usually do some running in the park. THere's something about being with nature and feeling the wind on my face which help me get over my down moods. Running in an indoor track doesn't help me. It has to be outside. Unfortunately, the snow/weather prevents me from doing this these days.
If you have access to a nice park with tracks not covered in snow, try it.

Check for any local monastaries or convents. Often, they'll have free or low cost rooms or cabins for people seeking "spiritual retreats." If you're not religious, usually that's still ok (I'm a non-believer and was still warmly welcomed at a cabin retreat in the south). I took a weekend in the woods to leave behind technology. I only brought a journal, pen and some light reading. Depending on where you are located, you could go camping for a weekend as well (even if it means driving a bit to a more temperate climate).
You could also give yourself a "staycation." Shut out the web, news, radio, etc. Only allow yourself comfortable movies/tv shows and books. Shut your phone off (that's why you have voicemail after all). Start the staycation with a massage. Day two go for a run or a hike. Or think about an art, craft or building project you'd like to do over the weekend. Anything but school, dissertation, politics, and media!!!!
I hope you find the perfect way to relax and take your mental break :-)

Go old fashioned. Have a drink. Nothing wrong with a stiff drink like a martini or manhattan.

A good place to start would be to remove yourself from this forum for a while...

I have not been on this site for 1 week. I feel much better about myself and the job search. we beat ourselves up too much- this place does not help.
