Snark and whatnot aside, I would actually be interested to hear what music people listen to while writing.
I already mentioned some of what I listened to in the "finishing the diss" thread, but in case you missed it:
1)King Kahn and The Shrines 2)Santogold 3)Wolves In The Throne Room 4)Baroness 5)Emperor

Classical or none. I can't concentrate with singing.

I too have a hard time listening to anything with lyrics that I know... find myself singing or just typing lyrics here and there in my writing. Love Jets to Brazil and The Bird and the Bee for data stuff though! Will check out your list--thanks! I have been using Ommwriter and they have really relaxing sounds for writing. I believe it's still a free program, but it shuts down everything else on your screen and provides a really nice full screen of happy wintry trees for writing. I find that I can write several hundred more words on the days I use it than the days I don't. This coupled with Freedom or Antisocial really allows for some writing to get done! www.ommwriter.com/macfreedom.com/anti-social.cc/Freedom and Antisocial were designed by a PhD student who is really friendly.

Depends on what I'm working on. Portishead, Black Sabbath, DJ Shadow, Chemical Brothers, Bjork, Rage Against the Machine, Tom Petty, and Pink Floyd are all things artists I can listen through an entire album on. This is helpful for blocking off periods of time to work for. The Portishead Pandora station becomes great for reading and the Chemical Brothers Pandora station becomes good for writing (or at least this was the case for me after I did enough thumbs upping and downing on Pandora)

Depending on how much I need to concentrate (e.g., writing vs. making tables vs. proofing): -Baroque classical (minus any singing) -Mindless Self Indulgence -Alternative Rock (http://player.cumulusstreaming.com/SLPLayer.aspx?WWWQ-H2)

i'm also a pandora fan -- i like the lady gaga + sigur ros station, "losing my edge" (lcd soundsystem) station, and a couple of others. basically, stuff i would also work out or job to. for really mindless stuff, i sometimes listen to podcasts -- makes the mindless task less dreary.

I can only listen to new age without lyrics while writing. I created an Eluvium station on Pandora, and pretty much listen to that nonstop.

Bump on Sigur Ros. Unless I learn hopelandic in the near future, I can be confident I won't be distracted by lyrics..

I favor a variety of house music - I have a Mateo and Matos pandora station that's awesome.

The Descendant's Tack is hitting home now and probably would for others who didn't have a successful run on the market. www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwPJSmREK60On a more positive note, the Wax Tailor Pandora station is working well for writing.
