$40,000 - $49,999
Job Description:
The program in American Culture Studies at Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in sociology in American culture studies, to begin July 1, 2011. We seek candidates whose research methods involve either qualitative or quantitative analysis, and who will share interests with colleagues from across the social sciences and humanities. Candidates must have completed their doctorates since 2007, and must have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. before July 1, 2011.
The program in American Culture Studies is an interdepartmental research and teaching program that aims at understanding American culture and society through humanities and social science approaches. Fellows will have the opportunity to work closely with core faculty, graduate students, and a continuing postdoctoral fellow in American Culture Studies, as well as with faculty across the University. In particular, scholars at Washington University are pursuing sociology-relevant research programs on poverty, inequality, public health, race, ethnic minorities, violence, community building, urban issues, and education. The St. Louis area offers a rich environment for the study of these and other social issues, and we are especially interested in candidates who can make productive use of that opportunity for their own research.
Our main goal in this postdoctoral program is the intellectual development of the Fellows and ourselves through productive academic interaction. Fellows are expected to be in residence during the fellowship period, apart from research-related travel, and to participate in the intellectual life of American Culture Studies and other units relevant to the Fellow’s research and teaching interests. Teaching responsibilities include one course each Fall and Spring semester, likely to include sociological research methods; as well as supervising directed study for a small number of students.
