I work 7 days a week - with the exception of special occasions of course. I don't work at night either. Typically stop at 4 or 5 and hit up the gym. Its also a good way to step back and reflect on your thoughts.

I'll also add that before I go to bed I decide what I am going to do the next morning or day. This prevents me from spending all morning trying to figure it out and get started - I wake up knowing exactly what I need to get out of bed and do. I think this is great advice.

I have a dissertation journal (fabulously decorated, of course) in which I write down what I did after each session of work and what I have to do. I like to break my diss into extremely small tasks (like 15-30 minute tasks). Its easier to get past any writers block when the tasks are easy and small (plus, it is is oh so satisfying to cross them off!). The journal is good to keep on hand, by the bedside or always in your bag, so you can write down any brilliant ideas you have throughout the day when you're not actually working on the bus. I take the journal to meetings with my advisor and committee members, too, so I have a record of everything pertaining to my diss in one place.

Thanks to those of you who suggested the Silvia book. I got it in the mail yesterday and read the whole thing in one sitting. I began planning my writing schedule immediately after. It actually has me excited about refocusing on my disserblahing.

"...disserblahing..."
Ah, thanks. At this point I so appreciate any humor nuggets!
And I also appreciate the suggestion to plan each evening what I'll work on the next morning. It made me realize why some days are so much less productive than others.
Now I'm off to pick up Thai. Food, that is.

Just listen to a lot of Oasis, that is what I did. I alternated between Scandinavian black metal, Santogold, and King Khan (I'm being serious).

Just letting you know how I did it, you don't have to be an rock critic. That is okay, I will just return to my R1 job and cry myself silly before I get ready to prepare teaching my one course for the semster since I did a buyout this Spring. You got me, ouch.

Who would guess that poking fun at Oasis would make a bigtime R1 professor with her bigtime course buyout so vindictive? I guess it's always high school.

I refuse to believe anyone on here has such a perfect academic life. If they did, they probably wouldn't be on here.
As a member of my committee says, this forum is the academic equivalent of a rusted out car where people go to do crank.

what a fool. She is clearly some bitter grad student who is probably in her 3rd year of writing her dissertation (that is what happens when Oasis breaks up I guess, takes some time to get over it).
