I wrote my dissertation to the Garden State Soundtrack...which is not typical of the type of music I normally listen to.

For those who need silence to concentrate, I've found a pair of full-ear noise-cancelling headphones (the real/electronic ones, not the 'isolating' pieces of garbage or ear buds) with white noise helps drown out most of the misc sounds and helps me concentrate. I first used youtube for a white noise soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KaOrSuWZeM) but then I used a freeware program to download 10 minutes of this video and convert it into an mp3. Put it on auto-repeat and I'm good for 6-8 hours of productivity.

I'll admit that I listen to obnoxious drum-and-bass to keep me motivated while I write.
Silence annoys me to no end when I'm writing.

I can't work in silence or with music. My white noise of choice is the local coffeeshop--the lull of conversations, the whirr of the coffee grinder, the hiss of the espresso machine. They all come together to create a "cone of silence" that I like. I think it's because as an undergrad I had to go to a coffeeshop to study away from my family. Now I *have* to have that noise to be productive. I have no idea what I'll do when I get a job... :)

This will be important to note when you land a job...for example I like to work in the evenings at coffeeshops or bookstores...I use to do most of my writing then...my first gig, all the shops in town closed by 6 and my current job is located in a place where they all become live music venues after 7pm. So...it has been completely challenging to change my work style to remain productive.
Ahhh...more to worry about.
