I know some slacs do phone interviews for essentially bureaucratic reasons. For example, I heard about a dean that wanted to listen in (for some reason related to judging the application pool I think -- more so to oversee the dept or process than the interview) and then another where they basically just wanted to "feel energy" and make sure that persons had PhDs or seemed confident that it would happen by whatever date they indicated. I had a few phone interviews from slacs when I was on the market and it seemed more like they were trying to weed out some of the possibilities.
Also, extra tid bit related to phone interviews in general, I know a full professor at a large R1 University who said that the phone interview is becoming much more common due to the budget crunches and juggling of schedules for those on the search committees.

Sadly, despite what I thought was a great interview I didn't get the position. This is based on info from the boards. They actually haven't gotten back to me (yet? I hope they take the time to let me know I didn't get it...kinda sad if the only way I find out in on the rumor mill). Anyway, thanks for all the help and insight you provided!

newone, when something doesn't happen for me, i just try to think that it's because something better is reserved for me. for the most part, it is true.
don't think that the result of your application was solely based on your performance. as many say in this forum, most of the time, it is a matter of fit with the department. i guess we just have to learn not to take these results personally.
i have developed a thick-heart (if there is such a word) from this cruel process. of course, i went through desperation when nothing was coming but i have learned that i was just one among many who are in the same predicament.
i have found so many (i have stopped counting) rejections through this board. they will probably get in touch with you later. there are many reasons, usually bureaucratic ones, that prevents hiring committees from getting back to us quickly. always remember that even if the process is cruel, it doesn't mean that the hiring people are cruel. i know you did not say they are but i am just saying. i have one interview - in person interview - in february. up to now i have not heard from them. such is this process.
it's okay to be sad. we all get sad about these things. but after a day or two, chin up and move on to the next one.
i hope you don't mind this unsolicited advice.

The job market was perhaps the most soul crushing experience of my life. Your interview probably went well--for all you know, there was an inside hire, or someone who went through the same program as the search chair, or any one of a thousand reasons. A prof I had said when you face rejection, You say 10 Hail Marys, 5 f*ck yous, have two beers, and get back to work. I'm not Catholic, and i don't drink, but the spirit of the advice is useful. Something will work out in the long run.

Thanks anonymous board people! You guys are so sweet and supportive. As disappointed as i am, I know that my loss is someone else's gain, and that when I don't get a position, someone who wanted it just as much did. And vice versa. When I finally (hopefully!) land something, it will mean someone else will be in the position I am now. Chinning up over here
